Servers built for large, multi-rank capacity almost always specify RDIMM; entry-level towers and workstations more often take UDIMM or ECC UDIMM. The letter "R" in RDIMM stands for Registered - the module carries a register buffer chip that sits electrically between the memory controller and the DRAM chips, re-driving the command and address signals to every DRAM chip on the module rather than having the controller drive them all directly. A UDIMM (Unbuffered DIMM) has no such chip - the controller talks to the DRAM directly. That single component is why the two are not interchangeable: a platform's memory controller is wired to expect one signal path or the other, not either.
Lenovo Press documents the electrical consequence directly: "RDIMMs (registered DIMMs), will use a 12 V input to the voltage regulator, whereas UDIMMs (unregistered DIMMs) will use 5 V. RDIMMs and UDIMMs cannot be mixed in a system." This is not a performance preference - it is two different power-delivery designs on the module itself.
The register buffer is what lets a channel carry more ranks of DRAM without the signal integrity problems that appear when a controller drives many DRAM chips directly at once. That is a capacity-and-density property, not a speed claim we are making - it is why registered memory is the module class server platforms with many DIMM slots and high per-socket capacity ceilings specify by default, while UDIMM (and ECC UDIMM, which adds error-correction bits without adding the register buffer) shows up mainly on smaller entry-level towers and workstation-class boards with fewer slots and lower capacity targets.
Before decoding anything, look at the plain text: the module's printed label and the seller's listing title normally spell out "RDIMM," "UDIMM," or "ECC UDIMM" directly. Where that text is missing or ambiguous, the vendor part-number prefix is a reliable second check on the major brands we track: Samsung uses M393/M321 for DDR4/DDR5 RDIMM and M391 for DDR4 UDIMM/ECC UDIMM. Kingston states the DDR4 consequence in one sentence: "even though UDIMM, RDIMM, and LRDIMM fit physically in the memory socket of your server, they also cannot be mixed, as doing so would lead to system boot failure." On DDR5 platforms, Kingston notes the module's physical key may prevent the wrong type from being installed at all - the incompatibility becomes a mechanical fact rather than only an electrical one. By the vendor's own prefix grammar. Samsung's RDIMM parts begin M393 (DDR4) or M321 (DDR5); Samsung UDIMM/ECC UDIMM parts begin M391 (DDR4). The label on the module (or the listing title) usually spells out "RDIMM" or "UDIMM"/"ECC UDIMM" directly - read that before decoding a part number by hand.
