Inclusion requires a manufacturer-verified Intel iGPU (Quick Sync). ARM models and iGPU-less Ryzen models — including current Synology Plus units — are excluded because they cannot hardware-transcode.
Plex playback comes in two modes. Direct play hands the file to the client untouched — nearly free for the server, and any NAS can do it. Transcoding re-encodes video on the fly because the client cannot handle the original — a phone on hotel Wi-Fi, a TV that predates HEVC, a burned-in subtitle track — and done in software it saturates a NAS-class CPU with a single 4K stream. Intel's Quick Sync is dedicated silicon that does the same job at a fraction of the load: the modest N100 in a budget UGREEN handles 4K HEVC transcodes that would flatten a far more expensive CPU without an iGPU.
This is why the brand landscape for Plex looks nothing like the general NAS market. UGREEN's entire Intel lineup qualifies — the value king's Quick Sync coverage is total, from the 2-bay DXP2800 to the 8-bay DXP8800 Plus. QNAP's TS-464 and TS-664 built their reputations on exactly this workload. TerraMaster's Intel boxes qualify at the lowest prices in the table. And Synology — the biggest name in NAS — is absent entirely, because its current Ryzen-based Plus models ship no iGPU. For a transcoding household, the "which brand" debate collapses to the live prices above.
One licensing note belongs in the budget: Plex gates hardware transcoding behind Plex Pass. The QNAP TS-464 is the category's reference box (PCIe for future 10GbE included); UGREEN's 4-bays undercut it with newer silicon; the TerraMaster F4-424 Pro brings an 8-core i3 at a price that reads like a typo. Heavy (6-8 bay Intel). Tens of terabytes, multiple 4K remuxes, several concurrent users: UGREEN's DXP6800 Pro and DXP8800 Plus pair 10-core i5 chips with dual 10GbE, and QNAP's TS-664 extends the TS platform to RAID 6 territory. Media libraries have a one-way ratchet: a 4K remux runs 50-80GB, a Blu-ray rip 25-40GB, a full TV series in 1080p easily 100GB+, and nothing ever gets deleted. A hundred-film collection with a modest TV habit crosses 10TB without trying; enthusiasts cross 50TB with enthusiasm. Work backwards from three years of collecting, add RAID overhead, and you have your drive budget — which is where the real money goes. At today's prices, the cheapest in-stock 20TB drive (MDD, $309.99) puts a 60TB-usable RAID 5 library at $1,239.96 in drives alone before the enclosure.
Drive guidance for this workload is mercifully simple: big CMR drives, nothing exotic. Streaming is sequential reads — the thing spinning drives are best at — so NAS-class or recertified enterprise drives from the live per-terabyte rankings are the right buy, and SSD caching adds little to a workload this linear. Put the flash budget into one more spinning drive instead. The one non-negotiable is CMR over SMR — rebuilds on a media array full of large drives are exactly where SMR's pathological write behavior hurts most.
Protection strategy differs from a document server, and honestly so: most Plex libraries are re-acquirable, which changes the backup math. RAID 5 or 6 protects the weeks of curation time a rebuild-from-scratch would cost, and that is usually protection enough for the media itself — but the Plex metadata database, watch states and collections are genuinely irreplaceable, tiny, and worth backing up on a schedule to any external target. Protect the library with RAID, protect the curation with backups, and spend the money saved on capacity.
Plex is kinder to networks than spec-sheet shoppers assume: a 4K remux streams at 40-100Mbps, so gigabit Ethernet carries several simultaneous streams and even good Wi-Fi handles one. The faster ports on these boxes earn their keep during library loading and file management, not playback — which means 2.5GbE is genuinely sufficient for a pure Plex box, and 10GbE is a file-transfer luxury. Wire the NAS to the router if humanly possible; the flakiest Plex setups are almost always Wi-Fi-attached servers, not underpowered ones.
The first evening's checklist, in order: update the NAS OS and install Plex from the official package source; store the config on the SSD if your model has M.2 (metadata on flash makes browsing snappy even when the library sleeps on spinning drives); point Plex at your media folders with the recommended naming scheme; enable hardware transcoding in Plex settings (it is off by default even on Quick Sync boxes); and set remote access through Plex's relay rather than port-forwarding the NAS itself. Then play the ugliest file you own on the weakest client you own — if that transcode is smooth, everything else will be.

If every client always direct-plays your exact formats — same codec, container and subtitles the TV supports natively — no. In practice, remote streams, phones, bandwidth limits, burned-in subtitles and older TVs all force transcodes, and one software-transcoded 4K stream will bring a NAS CPU to its knees.
