Buyers who would rather put the price difference into capacity than into endurance headroom they will never consume.
High bay counts where vibration between drives stops being theoretical, workloads that write continuously rather than in bursts, arrays that would be expensive to be without for the length of an RMA, and every capacity above the Plus line's documented ceiling, where the comparison ends and there is only one option.

Most WD Red questions are really recording-technology questions, and this one is not. Both tiers are stated as conventionally recorded across their current lines in Western Digital's own data sheets, so whichever of these two you buy, the shingled-drive problem that defines this brand's reputation does not arise.
That is worth saying first because it removes the usual reason to reach for the more expensive tier. People upgrade to Red Pro to be safe, and the thing they are being safe from is already absent from Red Plus. If the decision were about avoiding SMR it would already be made, and it is not.
Where the recording question does live is one tier below both of these. Plain WD Red, without Plus or Pro in the name, contains shingled models at 2TB, 3TB, 4TB and 6TB, printed as SMR in WD's own current product brief with a footnote naming the implementation as device-managed. That tier is a real trap and our [WD Red hub](/wd-red) lists every shingled model currently in stock with the source attached.
So read this page as a specification comparison between two conventionally-recorded NAS drives, which is a much more ordinary decision than the brand's history suggests. The premium buys endurance, warranty, rotational speed and capacity reach. It does not buy a different recording technology, because both sides already have the right one.
Western Digital's current Red Plus data sheet states an annualized workload rate of 180TB per year and a three-year limited warranty, across models from the 2TB WD20EFPX to the 12TB WD120EFGX, at rotational speeds that vary by model between 5400 and 7200.
The Red Pro data sheet states 550TB per year and a five-year limited warranty, and it states them for every model in the line rather than only the large ones, from the 2TB WD2002FFSX up to the 26TB WD260KFGX, at 7200rpm throughout. That last detail is worth stating precisely, because a figure of 300TB per year is repeated across ranking guides and it does not appear in WD's current Red Pro data sheet for any model in the line. We publish what the current document says.
So the headline difference is roughly three times the rated workload and two extra years of coverage. Alongside that, WD states support for up to 8 drive bays on Red Plus and up to 24 on Red Pro, and rotational vibration sensors on the Pro tier. Bay count is the specification most people skip and it is the one that most often decides the answer.
What we do not publish is a performance comparison between the tiers. Rotational speed and cache are manufacturer specification columns and we print them per part number, and turning them into a claim about how one drive feels against another would be a benchmark we have not run. The documented differences are endurance, warranty, bay support, vibration handling and capacity reach, and that is the whole of the honest case.
The workload rating is the deciding specification, and unlike most specifications you can check it against your own usage rather than guessing.
180TB per year is roughly 493GB a day, every day, for a year. A household array writing a 50GB backup nightly, ingesting a few hundred gigabytes of new media a month and otherwise serving reads is using single-digit percentages of that. Even an enthusiast setup with continuous camera recording and daily incremental backups rarely approaches it.
The honest conclusion is that most home arrays could not consume the Plus tier's rating if they tried, and the Pro tier's 550TB is headroom above headroom. Paying for it is not wrong, and it is not what the money is best spent on. The same premium put into capacity buys retention and free space, which you notice weekly, against endurance margin you never observe at all.
The workload figures that do land near the boundary come from a specific set of uses. Continuous multi-camera video recording, which writes without pause. Large-scale media transcoding that writes and rewrites working files. Sync targets for many clients. Anything running as a write cache or scratch volume. If your usage is on that list, run the arithmetic properly rather than taking a rule of thumb.
And if you cannot estimate it, the pragmatic answer is to look at the array you already have. Most NAS operating systems report lifetime bytes written per drive in their SMART display. Divide by the drive's power-on years and you have your real annual figure rather than an assumed one.
The strongest argument for Red Pro in a lot of builds has nothing to do with how much you write.
Every spinning drive vibrates, and in a chassis full of them the vibration is shared. WD states support for up to 8 bays on Red Plus and up to 24 on Red Pro, and states rotational vibration sensors on the Pro tier. Those two facts describe the same underlying situation: past a certain density, a drive's neighbours become part of its operating environment.
For a two or four bay desktop unit this is close to irrelevant, and the Plus tier's stated bay support covers it with room. For an eight bay unit you are at the documented edge. For anything above that, the Plus data sheet no longer describes your enclosure and the Pro data sheet does, which is a cleaner reason to buy Pro than any endurance calculation.
The second non-endurance argument is the warranty, and how much it is worth depends entirely on where the array lives. Five years against three is two extra years of somebody else paying for a replacement. For a NAS in a cupboard at home, where a failure costs you an hour and the price of a drive, three years is usually enough. For an array in a rack at a site you would have to travel to, or one whose downtime interrupts work, the longer coverage is frequently the whole case.
The third is simply that the Pro line reaches capacities the Plus line does not, which is the subject of the next section and the reason a meaningful share of readers never get to weigh any of this.
For a lot of buyers the tier decision is made by capacity before any of the above is considered, and the numbers in circulation for the Plus ceiling are unreliable enough to be worth addressing directly.
Western Digital's current Red Plus product brief and data sheet both top out at 12TB. WD's own store lists a 14TB Red Plus SKU that neither of those documents covers. Ranking guides quote 14TB on one page and 22TB on another; the 22TB figure appears to be Red Pro's range attributed to the wrong tier.
Our position is the narrow one: the documented Red Plus ceiling is 12TB, and a 14TB part exists outside the current documentation. We would rather give you a smaller number we can show you a document for than a larger one we cannot.
The Red Pro data sheet runs to 26TB with the WD260KFGX. Above the Plus range, there is no premium to evaluate. There is a drive that exists at that capacity and a tier that does not offer one, and the comparison on this page stops being relevant.
Before assuming you need the top of the range, check two things. Your enclosure's maximum supported drive capacity, which is in its documentation and is frequently lower than the largest drive on sale. And whether two smaller drives serve you better than one large one, which they often do on cost per terabyte and always do on rebuild time, at the price of bays you may not have spare.
The table pairs the cheapest in-stock Red Plus against the cheapest in-stock Red Pro at each capacity where both exist, in the same condition, and prints the gap in dollars and percent.
Two rules decide what appears. Both sides must be in stock at the same capacity, because pairing a stocked drive against an unstocked one measures our catalogue rather than the tier premium. And both must be in the same condition, because a large share of this line sells second-hand and a used Plus against a new Pro measures the used discount rather than the tier gap.
Listings priced far above the line's typical rate are flagged and excluded from the comparison. At a capacity where the only listing on one side is a seller asking several times the going rate, the resulting premium would describe that seller rather than the tiers, which is worse than showing nothing at all.
Read the premium as the price of the upgrade rather than as a verdict. A large premium strengthens the Plus case wherever your workload arithmetic allows it. A small premium makes the Pro tier nearly free, at which point the longer warranty and higher rating are worth taking whether or not you will use them.
The gap is not stable across capacities or across weeks, and it has occasionally inverted when Plus stock thinned at a capacity where Pro remained plentiful. A negative premium in the table is not an error, it is an opportunity with a short life. Buy Red Plus unless something specific pushes you off it. Both tiers are CMR, so the premium is not buying safety, and a household array consumes a small fraction of the 180TB per year Plus is rated for. Three things justify Red Pro properly: more than eight bays, where WD's own bay support and vibration sensors describe your enclosure and Plus does not; sustained continuous writing, where 550TB per year is a real constraint rather than comfortable margin; and any capacity above the documented Plus range, where there is no comparison left to make. Everywhere else, take the cheaper drive and put the difference into capacity - and check the part number on whatever you buy, because the tier name on a retail listing is not always the tier in the box.

The array's behaviour is governed by its slowest and smallest member, so mixing tiers means the Pro drive's higher rating protects only that drive rather than the pool.
