Refurbished Enterprise Hard Drives in the UK: Warranty Terms and Your Rights

Renewed, recertified, refurbished and used: what we can source on each

Four words turn up on enterprise hard drives that are no longer factory-sealed, and they are not interchangeable. Our tables use only two conditions, new and used. We class a row as new if Amazon reports it new, its title has no refurbished-type wording and its part number is not on Seagate's recertified list. That does not prove a warranty. Everything else sits in the used rows, whether the listing says renewed, recertified, refurbished or pulled, so a used row does not tell you which of the four words applies or who will answer if the drive fails.

Seagate Exos refurbished: what Seagate's recertified pages commit to

Seagate is the one maker whose recertified terms we have read at source. Its Factory Recertified Products page describes a three-step process, and one step is to confirm the product meets Seagate factory performance standards. The page says the drives are backed by a six-month warranty. It is also explicit that warranties for Seagate products that include prime drives do not apply to recertified products. A recertified drive, in other words, is not a new drive with new-drive cover: it has its own terms.

Seagate's recertified list names 15 programme part numbers with a 6-month limited warranty, including ST20000NM002C and ST24000NM000C. The list never says Exos and does not state the interface, so a title offering a refurbished Exos HDD does not by itself put that drive under Seagate's terms. Check the listing's part number against the list, then ask the seller who handles a warranty claim. We have not read equivalent programme terms from WD or Toshiba, so nothing in this section extends to them. The new Seagate Exos range is priced separately.

Your UK rights are separate from any manufacturer's warranty

A manufacturer's warranty is the maker's promise and lasts as long as the maker says. Statutory rights are separate. Part 1 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 applies where there is an agreement between a trader and a consumer, so these are rights a consumer has when buying from a trader. Section 9 says every contract to supply goods is treated as including a term that the quality is satisfactory. For a consumer buying a refurbished drive from a trader, five points matter.

• Quality is measured by what a reasonable person would consider satisfactory, taking account of any description, the price if relevant and all other relevant circumstances. A lower price and the word refurbished can both enter that test.
• Durability is listed as an aspect of quality. That does not give a drive any set lifespan.
• A defect specifically drawn to your attention before the contract does not count against the trader, so a clear condition note narrows what you can claim.
• The short-term right to reject has a time limit of 30 days, subject to the conditions in section 22.
• A fault that appears within six months of delivery is presumed to have been there on delivery, unless it is established the goods did conform, or the presumption is incompatible with the nature of the goods or how they fail to conform. It covers repair, replacement, price reduction and final rejection.

GOV.UK tells businesses they must offer a full refund if an item is faulty, not as described or does not do what it is supposed to. It also tells them they must repair or replace an item a customer returns within 6 months "unless you can prove it was not faulty when they bought it".

These rights belong to a consumer: an individual acting for purposes wholly or mainly outside their trade, business, craft or profession. A company is not an individual, and a sole trader buying wholly or mainly for the business is outside the definition, so check your own terms with the seller rather than relying on this section.

Are refurbished hard drives worth it, and are refurbished HDDs any good?

We cannot answer that for refurbished drives as a class, because no source behind this page gives failure rates for them. What we can set out is the trade. On a Seagate recertified drive you give up the prime-drive warranty and take six months of cover instead. On a drive described only as refurbished or pulled, a consumer buying from a trader may have nothing beyond statutory rights, and a business buyer may not have those.

Price is the other half. Right now the cheapest used enterprise 3.5-inch row works out at £20.49/TB and the cheapest new one at £23.04/TB, inc VAT. Those are two price levels and not a discount. The rows can be different models at different capacities, so the gap says as much about product mix as about condition. We print no percentage saving for the UK because we do not yet have a model-for-model figure.

So put the question this way: if the drive failed the day after its cover ended, could you absorb the replacement and the restore? If not, the new rows further down are the fairer comparison.

The Interface column separates refurbished enterprise SATA hard drives from SAS ones, and a row marks it as not stated where the listing data gives no interface, so confirm it from the part number. A row with no stated capacity has no per-TB price. Controller questions for the SAS rows belong to refurbished SAS drives, and the wider choice to SAS vs SATA. Drives pulled from servers have their own arrival checks at used server hard drives.

Refurbished data center hard drives by capacity

These five capacities get their own counts because enterprise buyers often shop by size. The figures cover used enterprise 3.5-inch rows of any brand: they do not show that a drive is an Exos or that it is recertified.

Counts change as listings sell. Whether a title says recertified or refurbished is for you to confirm from the listing and its part number; a 20 TB hard drive sold new is a separate decision.
