Best Server Hard Drives: Home, Media and NAS Servers, Ranked by £/TB
Prices checked: · Published: · Price tracking since 5 November 2026
Quick answer
There is no single best server hard drive. We rank new SATA drives by lowest current £/TB within a class: £23.04/TB for enterprise class and £37.81/TB for NAS class with part-number recording evidence. A SAS drive needs a SAS controller, so check your ports first. This ranks price, not reliability.
How the best server hard drives are ranked on this page
Our rule is simple enough to test against the tables. New drives only, listed on Amazon.co.uk, 3.5-inch, SATA, ranked by lowest current £/TB inside a class, with maker documents quoted beside them where we could read one. Best here means that basis and nothing more: there is no reliability ranking and no reviewer's pick.
Two classes do most of the work, because server means different things to different buyers.
| Feature | NAS class | Enterprise class |
|---|---|---|
| Maker's own positioning | Seagate calls IronWolf Pro an enterprise NAS drive, for media professionals and SMBs among others | Seagate says Exos is engineered for modern data centres; Toshiba aims MG at enterprise arrays and industrial servers |
| Lowest £/TB now | £37.81/TB | £23.04/TB |
| In-stock rows | 28 | 46 |
| Recording column | Shown: every row has part-number CMR or ePMR evidence, printed in the column | Not shown: this table is not filtered on part-number evidence. |
A third table, all classes together, sits in the home server section. It answers the blunt question of the lowest £/TB whatever the label, and it carries the least assurance.
Best home server hard drives: start with your ports
Before any ranking, work out what the machine can take. Seagate's guidance is that SAS drives cannot be plugged into SATA controllers, so a SAS drive is ruled out on a SATA-only build, however good its £/TB. The reverse does work: SATA drives may be plugged into SAS controllers. All three tables here are SATA for that reason.
We name no server, case or board as compatible, because we hold no source for any particular machine. Check the manual for the number of bays, whether they take 3.5-inch drives and what controller runs them.
The table below ranks every class together, showing 5 of 208 matches. It has no capacity floor, so a small drive can rank, and it makes no recording claim because desktop and other drives are mixed in. Right now Seagate Exos 26TB Internal Hard Drive leads at £23.04/TB, a total of £599.00.

If the all-class leader is a type of drive you would not choose, the NAS and enterprise tables further down apply the same rule to a narrower field.
Best Plex server hard drive: what we can and cannot say
We have not found a Plex document we could read that states storage, bitrate or transcoding requirements. So no figure on this page comes from Plex, and no drive is described here as tested with Plex or approved for it.
What remains is a storage decision you can make with your own numbers:
- Capacity: add up your library and allow for growth. We print no per-film size because we have no source for one.
- Hours: if the machine stays on around the clock, look up that duty in the maker's document for the exact model. The documents we could read for this page do not settle it for every row.
- Ports: every row here is SATA, which suits a SATA controller and, by Seagate's guidance, a SAS controller too.
- Spend: weigh total price against £/TB, since the cheapest terabyte may need a larger single payment.
Best media server hard drive: picking a class
For a media server, the nearest maker statement we hold is Seagate's: it calls IronWolf Pro 'the go-to storage choice for media professionals, SMBs, and on-prem AI model training'. That is positioning about an audience, not a test on your software. Seagate also says three years of complimentary Rescue Data Recovery Services come with all IronWolf drives, and that the service is not available in all countries, so confirm UK availability before you count on it.
Decide what losing the library would cost you before paying more per TB for a class, because neither table can price that. The choice then runs between the two tables below: NAS class with part-number recording evidence, or enterprise class with a maker's data centre positioning.
Best hard drive for NAS server use, with sourced recording technology
This table is the only one on the page that shows recording technology. Every row is a new NAS-class SATA drive whose part number has part-number CMR or ePMR evidence, printed in the column. A listing without that evidence is left out even if its Amazon title says CMR, because a title is a seller's claim. Synology's own HAT line is also excluded.

The current leader is Seagate IronWolf at £37.81/TB. We have not found a workload figure for IronWolf Pro or WD Red Pro in the documents we could read, so none is printed. The 550 TB/year figure in the next section is Toshiba MG only and does not carry across.
Best server hard disk in the enterprise class
This is the page's main table: 8 of 46 new enterprise-class SATA drives, lowest £/TB first. A listing with no recorded interface or form factor falls outside this table. SAS models are excluded on purpose; they belong on SAS hard drives.

Toshiba offers the clearest line statement we read: every MG Series member has a workload rating of 550 TB/year, and the series is positioned for enterprise storage arrays and industrial server and storage systems. Seagate describes Exos as engineered for modern data centres, at up to 32TB per drive. Whether any price gap between the classes is worth paying depends on the duty you plan.
Best hard drive for server storage: what failure data adds
A price rank says nothing about failure, and a maker's name says less than it seems. Backblaze's Q2 2026 report, covering 354,415 analysed hard drives with a quarterly annualised failure rate of 1.73%, puts two Seagate 12TB models at 3.17% and 1.35%. The second, ST12000NM001G, rests on 13,177 drives, 1,193,856 drive days and 44 failures. The first is ST12000NM0008.
Those are rates from one company's fleet. Two low-count Seagate models, 965 and 1,235 drives, had only 22 and 25 failures yet quite high rates. We use these figures to show why we do not rank reliability, not to tell you which listing will last.
Best place to buy server hard drives: what we can say
We can only speak to the merchant we price, Amazon.co.uk, and that is not a finding that it beats anyone else. Prices are pounds sterling inc VAT. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, a contract to supply goods is treated as including a term that their quality is satisfactory, and the short-term right to reject ends after 30 days. A consumer is an individual acting for purposes wholly or mainly outside their trade, business, craft or profession. A maker's limited warranty sits apart from those rights, and this page quotes no warranty length.
Buying used instead? The used server hard drives page starts from that condition, and server hard drives covers the wider category.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an enterprise drive for a home server?
We hold no source that says a home server must have one. Compare the NAS and enterprise tables on £/TB, then look at whether the maker's document for the exact model covers the duty you plan.
Can a server with a SAS controller take SATA drives?
Yes: by Seagate's support guidance, SATA drives may go on SAS controllers. Bays, cabling and the rest of your machine are still yours to confirm, as we name no specific system.
Is a Plex hard drive a special type of drive?
We hold no Plex document saying what one would be, so we treat Plex as a workload rather than a product class. Choose by interface, capacity and the maker's statement for the model.
Why does only one table show a recording column?
That table is filtered to part numbers with CMR or ePMR evidence in our records. The others are not, and leaving the column out is more honest than repeating what a listing title says.
