22TB Hard Drive: How Much Space You Really Get and What It Costs

Prices checked: · Published: · Price tracking since 5 November 2026

Quick answer

A 22TB hard drive holds 22 trillion bytes, which an operating system counting in binary reports as about 20.01 TiB. We hold maker documents for five enterprise families at this capacity: Exos X22, Ultrastar HC570 and HC580, Toshiba MG10F and MG11. On Amazon.co.uk the enterprise class starts at £26.42/TB.

22TB hard drive actual capacity: why your system shows about 20

No space has gone missing. The makers and operating systems are using different units. Seagate and Toshiba both define a terabyte on the label as one trillion bytes. Toshiba also gives the binary definition operating systems use, which is 2 to the power of 40, or 1,099,511,627,776 bytes.

The working is one division: 22,000,000,000,000 / 1,099,511,627,776 = 20.01. Your system therefore reports about 20.01 TiB before formatting and filesystem overhead take their share. The gap of roughly 9% applies to any drive measured this way, because it comes from the unit and not from the hardware, so buying a different brand will not close it.

The calculator below starts at that six-drive RAID 6 layout. It works in decimal TB, like the label, so divide its usable figure by 1.0995 to predict what the array will report.

Striping with double parity; four drives or more.

Figures are in TB as manufacturers state capacity (1 TB = 10^12 bytes); an operating system that counts in powers of two shows the same capacity as a smaller number (strictly TiB, often labelled TB). In classic RAID, drives of different sizes count only at the smallest drive's capacity. This calculation is not a substitute for a backup.

Who makes a 22TB drive: five families on their own data sheets

Toshiba MG10F10 disks, helium sealed; sold as 22 TB and 20 TBSATA 4.35 W, 0.20 W/TB; SAS 4.82 W, 0.22 W/TB; one figure covers 22 and 20 TB
Toshiba MG11MG11ACA22TE (SATA), MG11SCA22TE (SAS); also sold from 14 TB to 24 TBSATA 4.35 W, 0.20 W/TB; SAS 4.83 W, 0.22 W/TB

Except where WD states the figure, W/TB here is our division of the idle watts by 22, rounded to two places. Toshiba's MG10F and MG11 are lowest. A quirk worth knowing sits on the X22 sheet: its SAS model idles below its SATA model, 5.5 W against 5.74 W, while the Ultrastar HC570 runs the other way, 6.0 W for SAS and 5.7 W for SATA. So the interface does not predict which version draws less. The figure has to come from the sheet for that exact drive.

22TB hard drive Western Digital: HC570 or HC580?

On the data sheets the HC580 draws less for the same speed. In SATA it idles at 5.5 W against the HC570's 5.7 W, and at random 50/50 reads and writes it draws 8.4 W against 9.3 W, with both rated at 291 MB/s. WD states CMR for both, and designs the HC570 for workloads up to 550 TB a year.

Telling them apart is a matter of the model number: HC570 is WUH722222, HC580 is WUH722422. One sheet detail cuts against the HC580 at this size: it is a 10-disk platform also sold at 24 TB, where WD states 0.23 W/TB against 0.25 W/TB here in SATA. The WD Ultrastar page follows the family at other capacities.

Does 22TB beat 20TB or 24TB on watts and money?

On watts, 22 TB sits in the middle, and the same-sheet comparisons show it. The X22 draws 5.74 W at 22 TB and 5.4 W at 20 TB in SATA, which is 0.26 W/TB against 0.27 W/TB, so the larger drive edges it. In SAS the X22 sheet gives 5.5 W for both sizes, a clearer win at 0.25 W/TB against 0.275 W/TB. Going up instead, HC580 drops from 0.25 W/TB at 22 TB to 0.23 W/TB at 24 TB.

On money, no rule holds, because the answer changes with stock. Set £26.42/TB from this page beside the live figures on the 20TB and 24TB pages, and compare like with like on condition, since a used row can set the low point at any of the three.

A 22TB rebuild floor at three stated rates

Writing 22,000,000,000,000 bytes once sets the shortest possible rebuild, and the stated rate does the rest. The Exos X22's 285 MB/s gives 77,193 seconds, or 21.4 hours. The 291 MB/s on the HC570 and HC580 gives 75,601 seconds, or 21.0 hours. Toshiba quotes the MG11 at 285 MiB/s maximum sustained (typical), and one MiB is 1,048,576 bytes, so that is 298,844,160 bytes per second, 73,617 seconds, or 20.4 hours. The MG11 looks quickest partly because of the unit, so do not read 285 MB/s and 285 MiB/s as the same figure. A rebuild sharing the array with other work will take longer, and we print no estimate for a real array because we have not found a maker document giving a rebuild rate.

22TB hard drive NAS and surveillance classes

Neither of the next tables is enterprise. NAS class has 2 offers from £43.41/TB. For a 22TB NAS purchase, what the box accepts is the deciding question, and it is one we cannot answer from the documents behind this page. Your NAS maker's drive list is the place to confirm the exact part number.

22TB hard drive refurbished: warranty and refund

The table labels offers New or Used, with no refurbished category. For any Used row, separate what the maker promises from what the law requires. Take the Exos X22 as an example: Seagate's 5-year limited warranty and 2.5M-hour MTBF rating describe the product, and we have found no document tying either to a unit resold second hand, so get the warranty position from the seller in writing. If a drive arrives faulty or not as described, GOV.UK tells businesses they must offer a full refund, so a business seller carries that duty.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a 22TB hard drive sale on at the moment?

We can only show the price at the last check, not a discount. The lowest enterprise offer is £581.25, and we print no percentage off because a list-price saving is the seller's claim, not something we measure. Any sale would show up as a lower figure in the table.

Which 22TB drives are CMR?

Maker documents state CMR for all five: the Exos X22, whose sheet lists Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR) as Yes, the Ultrastar HC570 and HC580, and Toshiba's MG10F and MG11. That is a family statement, so rely on the Recording column for each row rather than the listing title.

Which 22TB hard drive Seagate model is SATA: ST22000NM001E or ST22000NM000E?

ST22000NM001E is SATA and ST22000NM000E is SAS, according to Seagate's X22 sheet. One digit separates them, so check it on the listing before ordering. The SAS vs SATA comparison sets out how the two interfaces differ.
