What sixteen channels is actually for

Sixteen channels is a small commercial installation, a large property, or a house where somebody has been enthusiastic. It is a meaningful step up in price from eight, and unlike the four-to-eight step it is not one to take speculatively - the cost difference buys a lot of other things.

The clearest reason to buy sixteen is that you already have twelve cameras or a concrete plan for them. The second clearest is redundancy of a sort: if a recorder is going to be the single point of failure for a site, having spare channels means a failed camera can be replaced without touching the recorder's configuration.

The PoE budget is worth checking at this size in a way it is not at eight. A recorder with sixteen PoE ports does not necessarily have the power budget to run sixteen cameras at their maximum draw simultaneously, particularly if some of them have heaters or motorised lenses. That figure is in the recorder's specifications and is not something we hold or publish.

Sixteen streams is a different storage problem

The concurrency is the issue rather than the total volume. Sixteen cameras writing continuously means the drive head is servicing sixteen distinct write positions, which from the drive's perspective is much closer to a random workload than the individually sequential streams suggest. It is the reason surveillance drives publish a workload rating and a supported camera count rather than just a capacity.

It is also the point at which one drive stops being obviously the right architecture. Some recorders in this class take two bays, which allows either more capacity or actual redundancy. This bites seasonally, which is what makes it hard to diagnose. Outdoor cameras with heaters draw far more in winter than in summer, so an installation that has been stable since it was commissioned in June starts dropping cameras in December. The symptom looks like failing cameras rather than a power ceiling.

Footage on a recorder's internal drive is on one disk with no redundancy and no backup. That is acceptable for a system whose purpose is to have the last two weeks available, and it is not acceptable if the footage is a business record. A NAS gives you an array, snapshots and a backup path to somewhere else, and at this scale those stop being luxuries.

Against that, NAS surveillance licensing is where the cost reappears - several vendors include a small number of camera licences and charge for the rest, and at sixteen cameras that charge can exceed the price of the recorder this page is about. Check the licence terms before assuming the NAS route is cheaper.

The hybrid that people actually end up with is worth naming: recorder for the live system and the working retention, with a scheduled copy of anything that matters onto the NAS.
