SanDisk NAS 800 is the NVMe side of the new SanDisk NAS storage family. It moves the NAS SSD conversation from SATA bays to M.2 2280 PCIe 5.0 media, where endurance, thermal behavior and NAS software support matter as much as peak speed.

NAS cache versus all-flash storage
NVMe in a NAS is not one feature. Some systems use M.2 drives only as read/write cache in front of hard drives. Others allow NVMe storage pools, where the SSDs hold the data directly. NAS 800 is more interesting in the second case because a high-capacity, high-TBW M.2 drive can become the primary pool rather than a small accelerator.
Cache still has a place, especially for metadata-heavy workloads, virtual machines, databases and repeated small-file access. It is less useful for large sequential media files that are read once. If the workload is mostly Plex direct play or backup streams, bigger hard drives often beat expensive NVMe cache on total value.
Thermal and platform considerations
PCIe 5.0 SSDs can produce more heat than older Gen3 NAS NVMe drives. A desktop motherboard may have a large heatsink and direct airflow; a compact NAS may not. Before buying a NAS 800 for sustained writes, verify that the NAS vendor supports the drive form factor, that the lid or tray can accommodate the thermal solution, and that the slot is intended for your planned use.
Network speed also limits visible performance. A single 2.5GbE or 10GbE client will not consume the full sequential capability of a PCIe 5.0 drive. NAS 800 becomes compelling when several clients, virtualization, local indexing or all-flash storage pools create random I/O demand beyond what a hard-drive pool can provide.
NAS 800 versus older WD Red SN700
WD Red SN700 remains a useful comparison because it is the older, widely recognized WD Red NVMe NAS SSD. NAS 800 is much newer and much faster on paper. The practical question is not just the spec sheet: if SN700 is substantially cheaper at 1TB, 2TB or 4TB and your NAS runs only PCIe Gen3 lanes, the older drive may still be the rational buy.
