NAS cache suitability
Both families are relevant for NAS cache, but cache is not a magic speed button. Read cache helps when hot data is reused. Write cache needs redundancy, endurance and power-loss planning. A mirrored pair of smaller SSDs can be safer than one oversized drive if the NAS is using the SSD tier for writes.
For a Gen3 NAS slot, WD Red SN700 may deliver most of the performance the platform can expose. For a newer system with high-speed M.2 lanes, multiple users and all-flash pool support, NAS 800 has the stronger specification case.
All-flash NAS suitability
An all-flash NAS is less about peak benchmark numbers and more about predictable latency, sustained writes, thermal management and enough capacity to avoid constant expansion. NAS 800's 7.68TB top capacity makes it more flexible for compact flash pools than SN700's 4TB ceiling. The economic check remains current price per terabyte.
