1TB SAS vs 1TB SATA → (coming soon)
Small-capacity 10K RPM SAS drives are the cheapest way into low-latency enterprise storage. OEM pulls from Dell and HP often come with caddy trays included.
Dell, HP, and IBM OEM-branded drives are the same Seagate or HGST mechanisms with custom firmware. They work in any SAS controller and are significantly cheaper.
512n drives are universally compatible. 512e drives emulate 512-byte sectors on 4K physical sectors. Both work, but 512n avoids alignment edge cases on older controllers.
10K 2.5" drives suit small-database IOPS workloads. 7.2K 3.5" nearline drives at this capacity are ultra-cheap bulk storage for dev/test or cold data.
1TB SAS drives work in RAID 6 but the small capacity means you need many drives to build a useful array. These are better suited for RAID 1 mirrors or JBOD configurations for dev/test environments.
At this capacity, HP, Dell, and HGST OEM pulls dominate. Seagate Constellation and Enterprise Capacity series are also common. Most are refurbished datacenter pulls.
Most 1TB SAS drives are only available refurbished since this capacity is no longer manufactured new. Refurb quality is generally excellent - these are low-hours datacenter pulls. Verify SMART data on arrival.

SAS enterprise HDDs suit nearline and backup workloads requiring dual-port multipath and high sustained throughput.
