WD My Cloud NAS devices offer plug-and-play personal cloud storage with pre-installed WD Red drives. Designed for simplicity with mobile app access, automatic backups, and minimal configuration required.
WD My Cloud is ideal for users who want personal cloud storage without the complexity of Synology or QNAP. Devices come pre-populated with WD Red drives and include a mobile app for remote file access and automatic photo/video backup. The EX2 Ultra offers 2-bay RAID 1 mirroring for redundancy. However, WD My Cloud lacks Docker, VM support, and the app ecosystem of Synology/QNAP - it is best suited for straightforward backup and file sharing.

The WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra and EX4100 support drive replacement. You can swap in any compatible 3.5" SATA HDD. Single-bay My Cloud Home units have non-replaceable internal drives. For the EX series, WD Red Plus or Seagate IronWolf are recommended replacements.
WD My Cloud has limited app support compared to Synology and QNAP. The EX2 Ultra supports a basic Plex Media Server but its Marvell Armada 385 processor cannot hardware-transcode video. Docker and VM support are not available. For Plex or Docker workloads, Synology or QNAP are significantly better choices.
WD My Cloud is simpler to set up - plug in, create an account, and start backing up via the mobile app. Synology requires more initial configuration but offers far more functionality (Docker, Surveillance Station, Photos, Drive). If you only need basic backup and remote access, My Cloud works well. If you want room to grow, Synology is the better investment.
